The Parasparam Aashram is a cohesive family – never referred to as an orphanage – set up by the Parasparam Trust, and is a fine example of give and take. Located in the tiny village of Batlagondu , near the historic temple city of Madurai in the South Indian state of Tamilnadu, the Aashram accommodates human inmates, who are all semi-orphaned girls – we specifically say “human”, because part of the Aashram is also a shelter to several four-legged beings, cats and dogs.
The uniqueness of this home lies in its caring for girls with only one parent – this is because these children are often neglected or even abandoned by their surviving parent, for several reasons. Parasparam takes in, cares for, educates and provides the self-confidence to these girls until they reach a state of independence. The magic of Parasparam was that the girls are never treated as “charity cases”, but made to feel secure and special, are involved by turns in the day to day functioning of the Aashram, which imbues them with responsibility, accountability, self-reliance, and above all, a great sense of belonging. Apart from formal education, the girls are trained in vocational skills like screen printing, tailoring, basic accounting, beauty treatment, to name a few. Their life at the Aashram gives them the courage and the confidence to face the world. Today, with former inmates gainfully and happily employed, Parasparam has been graduating to higher levels. The word “Parasparam” - “Mutual” – acquires a deeper meaning with the advent of the cats and dogs – the homeless and disadvantaged children share their space with felines who suffered the same fate. Parasparam has given them a place in which to grow, learn, explore the wonder of life, and put their painful pasts behind them. Needless to add, the children adore and take good care of their four-legged inmates (outnumbering them!) – in turn, the animals reciprocate by being lively and loving playmates for the children. At Parasparam, the children miss nothing – education, vocational training, skill development, play, entertainment, prayer and worship, home making and cooking, medical care, work and career, etc. Apart from inmates, Parasparam extends its supportive arm to its neighbors too – particular mention can be made of the popular medical camps in ENT and such specialties being held at Parasparam periodically, by leading physicians from the metros, making quality healthcare accessible to the rural population – follow-up operative procedures and such advanced medical care at metros are also facilitated. And Parasparam not only wants to provide such best care for its existing inmates, but also desires to grow further, encompassing more and more beneficiaries… Higher education for senior inmates… Gainful employment for qualified inmates… Marriages for safely settling in life, post-Parasparam… Inculcating secularism – a shrine for Shirdi Sai Baba… Increasing number of inmates – moving to higher levels with alternate self-sustaining activities… Click here to download a PPT presentation on “The Making of Parasparam – Viji's selfless contribution”.
